South Loop Digital is Xblu’s in-house media division. It started the way good side projects usually do: a logo to stamp on drone flights over the Chicago lakefront. A few years and a lot of batteries later, it is a working archive of aerials, time-lapses and ride-along POV spread across a YouTube channel and a Vimeo channel, and it is where we test a question our clients keep asking: how fast can a pile of raw media become something people actually want to browse?

This fall we rebuilt southloop-digital.com around that archive. The footage is the fun part. The useful part, for anyone sitting on a folder of photos, a product video backlog or years of event coverage, is how quickly it turned into an organized, searchable, on-brand product.

What the Division Shoots

We pick the tool that gets the shot, not the other way around. A DJI Mini 4 Pro or Mini 5 Pro handles skyline reveals, low passes over the water and night flights. GoPros ride on chest and helmet mounts for e-bike and BMW R1200GSA motorcycle POV, and run TimeWarp for long rides. Fixed cameras sit for hours or days when the story is change over time. Everything below links to the real film on South Loop Digital.

From Two Channels to One Library

Before the rebuild, the footage lived where it was uploaded: 192 videos on YouTube and Vimeo, some posted to both, titled in whatever mood we were in that day. Nobody could browse it by place, season or subject, including us. Here is how it became a library, in the order it happened. The whole first version, from export to a live site, came together in an afternoon using our AI-assisted build process.

STEP 1

Collect

Every upload from both channels, with its title, description, runtime, tags and view count. 192 videos.
STEP 2

De-duplicate

Vimeo uploads matched to their YouTube twins by runtime and title, so nothing shows up twice. 173 unique films.
STEP 3

Organize

Each film sorted into categories, places and collections, and tagged with season and the gear it was shot on.
STEP 4

Build

A custom WordPress theme and plugin: instant search, stacked filters, a map, and a page for every film with video structured data for Google.
STEP 5

Keep it current

Twice a day the site checks both channels. New uploads arrive already sorted, with no manual entry.

Search That Thinks in Places

People don’t look for footage by upload date. They look for a landmark, a neighborhood, a season or a feeling. So the library searches titles, places, tags and descriptions as you type, knows that “e-bike” and “ebike” are the same thing and that St. Paddy’s is St. Patrick’s, and lets you stack filters for category, place, collection, season, length and format. Every filtered view has its own link, so “winter flights over the North Side” can be sent to a client in one click. A map shows where each film was shot, and picking a pin plays what was filmed there.

A real search on South Loop Digital. Five films feature the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse, and the results update with every keystroke.

Cut for Wherever It’s Going

Every platform wants a different frame. YouTube and websites want 16:9. Shorts, Reels and TikTok want 9:16. Instagram and LinkedIn feeds do best at 4:5 or square. We shoot wide and in 4K so there is room to reframe one clip into all of them without losing the shot, and the library already flags which films were delivered vertical, so the social cuts are as easy to find as the long-form flights.

A Player That Keeps Viewers on Your Site

Embedded YouTube players come with baggage: auto-captions reading “[Music]” over a silent drone flight, a title bar, a logo and a “More videos” tray that invites viewers to leave. On South Loop Digital, YouTube’s chrome is hidden behind a custom player in the site’s own colors, with play, seek, mute and full screen and nothing else. When one film ends, the next one in the row starts, and every film also has its own page with details, related videos and a way to ask about licensing.

Where We’ve Flown

Most flights launch within a few miles of the South Loop, which is where the name comes from. The rest come from road trips with a drone in the bag.

Number of films per place. Chicago breaks down further into the South Loop and Museum Campus, the river and downtown, the North Side lakefront and the South Side.

What It Means for Your Brand

  • Your archive is already an asset. Product videos, event coverage and project photos sitting in a channel or a shared drive are a portfolio waiting for an interface.
  • Organize the way people search. Place, landmark, season, product and project beat upload date every time.
  • Shoot once, publish everywhere. Capture wide and high-resolution, then cut 16:9, 9:16 and 4:5 versions from the same footage.
  • Keep viewers on your domain. A branded player and a page for every video earn the watch time and the search traffic, instead of handing them to a platform.
  • Speed is a feature. When capture, editing and the website come from one team, a gallery can launch while the moment is still news.

Work With Xblu’s Media Division

South Loop Digital is the rapid media and content creation side of Xblu. We shoot drone aerials, GoPro POV and time-lapse around Chicagoland and beyond, cut it for every platform you post to, and build the galleries, portfolios and video libraries that make it easy to show off. Xblu’s marketing team can then put it to work in your ads, social and website.
